Today, the Siaya County Assembly passed the Siaya County Widows Protection Bill, 2024 ((Sponsored by Hon. Skolastica Madowo – commonly known as Mercedes)- a groundbreaking law that seeks to protect, empower, and uphold the dignity of widows across the county.
The Act establishes:
County & Ward Widows Welfare Committees to champion widows’ rights and representation.
The Siaya County Widows Welfare Fund to support economic, social, and emotional empowerment.
Legal protection from harmful cultural practices such as ritual cleansing, forced inheritance, and discrimination.
Awareness and welfare programs promoting inclusion, equity, and justice.
The legislation marks a major step toward social protection, equality, and human dignity for widows in Siaya.
This milestone was made possible through the joint initiative of the FPFK Widows Project and the RONA Foundation.
This was presided by the County Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. George Owino Okode, MBS and Members of the county assembly. Representing FPFK was the social ministry Head of Programs Pastor Joshua Kelele.
The FPFK Widows project is sponsored by Pinsebevegelsen (Norwegian Pentecostal Mission)
