Narok Peace project

Narok Peace project is community resilience for peace funded by IAS Denmark operating in Kilgoris, Narok County. The project work towards strengthening community resilience to intra-ethnic conflict among the Maasai in Kilgoris, Narok County. The project has strived to deescalate the violent conflicts through establishment of community peace networks and structures, use of the ICT enabled early warning system, community- stakeholder engagement dialogues, social contracts, media advocacy through radio talks, livelihood initiatives and water project for peace. Specifically, the project worked to see that:

  1. The Maasai clans in Kilgoris have started resolving

their conflicts without violence

  1. The target group’s income will have improved signifi- cantly, enabling them to support their families and contribute to the economy of their villages.
  2. Advocacy with duty bearers (government, elders, and clan leaders) ensures that laws are respected and that there is mutual trust.
  3. Victims and perpetrators of violence in Kilgoris experi- ence fewer post-traumatic stress disorders.

Project Results and achievements

After conduction the project end line evaluation in 2024 it was noted that;

  1. 90 % of the communities in the project target areas of Kilgoris are now able to resolve their conflicts following established structures and formed social agreements They can involve the security agencies in handling claims and conflicts than before.
  2. 80 % of the targeted youths were trained with various skills such as hairdressing, barbering, carwash and driving thereafter supported with livelihood assets to start and grow their business. The businesses have grown enabling them to generate income to support themselves and their families. The have reported earning between KES 300- 700 per day. Through this they are savings at group level to support members to start Income generating activities at individual levels. With a saving of Ksh 5000, 2 members were supported with Ksh 2500, bought 50 chick per person. This will continue to ensure all members have business Through this initiative, a total of 30 youths from both communities were trained with skills including 7 youths on hair dressing, 2 youths on barbering and 21 on carwash and driving. The project also paid for the training over a period of three months with support from local service providers.
  3. Through the use of the EWER system, the participants reported satisfying reports on the duty bearers. They reported that the relationship between the community and duty bearers has tremendously improved.
  4. By offering mental health programs and 8 counselling sessions, the projects noted significant change in the number of post-traumatic stress disorders. The community was equipped with ways and sources to get counselling programs, which led to 90 % reduction of the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD).
